Background : The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between a regular physical activity and hypertension in subway office workers.
Methods : We studied 49 workers who were divided into two groups; 26 workers participated in physical activity of endurance type such as brisk walking and jogging at least 12weeks (intervention group) and 23 workers in the sedentary life-style (control group) in a subway company. Information related to blood pressure was collected by a questionnaire and physical test. 12 weeks exercise program with exercise trainer and nurse was conducted.
Results : After exercise program the mean systolic blood pressure significantly decreased from 145.9 mmHg to 140.5 mmHg (p=0.001). There was significant difference of systolic blood pressure before and after 3 months intervention between intervention group and control group. The percent of mild hypertension (¡Ã140 mmHg in systolic blood pressure) significantly decreased from 42.3% to 30.8% (p=0.025). Diastolic blood pressure decreased from 88.5 mmHg to 87.4 mmHg (p=0.081). The percent of mild hypertension(¡Ã90 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure) decreased from 38.5% to 30.8% (p=0.157).
Conclusions : It was suggested that regular physical activities in workplace by health manager, improved pre?hypertension and mild hypertension. Further experimental study would be necessary to demonstrate long?term effect of a regular physical activity to blood pressure after adjusting other life style.
